September 2014
From the Desk of Mr. Dorethy
Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome everyone to the 2014-2015 school year. We have gotten off to a great start this year at Unity.
We have 3 new staff members this year. Amy Shirey will be teaching English 1 and English 4. Kourtney Hake will be teaching English 2, Speech and Writing. Frank Cash will be teaching Special Education. Please give all of them a Unity Welcome when you see them in the community or at events this school year.
This year our athletic teams will again be competing in 2 different conferences. The football team will compete in the North Division of the Western Illinois Valley Conference (WIVC). This conference is made up of 1A and 2A schools. The football team and Coach Krietemeyer are looking forward to another outstanding season. The football team opened the season against West Central on August 29th. Coach Krietemeyer has 52 players out for football this season. The rest of our sports will compete in the South Division of the West Central Conference. The volleyball team has 24 athletes out this year. They opened the season against Pleasant Hill with a win on August 26th. Coach Sara Stoll has her team looking for a regional title. The golf team opened the season on September 3rd at Rushville; Coach Littleton has 8 athletes out for the program. Please support all of the Mustang activities this year.
Each student and parent has the opportunity to view the student handbook at the high school web site, www.unityhs.weebly.com. If you have any questions concerning the handbook or anything else, feel free to contact me at 217-936-2116 x141

SEPTEMBER NEWS
We are off to a running start here at the middle school. The students in grades 5 – 7 have adapted well to the use of the macbooks in their classes. There is a helpdesk setup outside the MS office every morning if your student is having trouble. As more grades are entered into PowerSchool, I encourage the parents to keep tabs on their student’s grades. If you need help accessing your account, please contact the middle school office.
I would like to personally welcome our new staff member at UMS:
Kelly Johnson – 6th Grade English-Language Arts
General Information
Advancement to the Next Grade:
The Unit #4 Board of Education has made a policy that all students must pass English, Language Arts (Reading), Math, and at least one of the following two courses: Science or History (Social Studies) to move on to the next grade. If students do not meet these requirements they will be retained (held back) in their current grade.
We are monitoring all student academic progress by utilizing the Fail List. Please note that any student in an extracurricular activity that is on the Fail List will not be able to participate the next week. Encourage your child to complete their homework every night.
Power School: Power School is up and running, please utilize this tool by contacting our secretary, Missy Shaffer. She can register you so that you are able to see your child’s lunch balances, grades, attendance, etc. on your own computer. You can also email teachers from this site as well.
