From the Desk of Mr. Klusmeyer
It has been a great start to the school year. Our 7th and 8th grade students have embraced the use of their macbooks and are actively engaged. The 6th grade is a in new location this year and enjoying their new tables. The 5th grade students have adjusted to life at the middle school and now realize this is not such a bad place after all. As more grades are entered into PowerSchool, I encourage the parents to keep tabs on their student’s grades. If you need help accessing your account, please contact the middle school office.
I would like to personally welcome the new members to our UMS staff:
Josh Arnsman – Health
Michelle Harris – Special Education Teacher
Tonja Hull - Aide
Marcia Jones – Custodian
Peggy Muegge - Title
Activities
The 7th & 8th Grade Student Council has begun their fundraiser. They are selling cookie dough which will be used to fund their activities such as dances, skating, bowling, YMCA Lock-ins, trips to various plays or musicals, money for the 8th grade field trip to Springfield, and money for the 7th grade field trip. The students work hard to plan fun events for all the students to enjoy all year long.
The UMS baseball season is at its halfway point and the team continues to work hard every day. Coach Brad Voth and Coach Trevor Hull have done a good job teaching the boys the fundamentals of baseball. The highlights of the season so far have been a 1st place finish in the Southeastern Tournament. Several games were cancelled this past week because of the heat but the boys will be ready to play again next week.
UMS Girls Basketball will start practice on Tuesday, September 3rd. 8th grade Coach Tim Nutt and 7th grade Coach Rob Kuhn are excited to begin their year with a great group of girls. Their first game is Tuesday, September 24th with Brown Co.
General Information
Advancement to the Next Grade:
The Unit #4 Board of Education has made a policy that all students must pass English, Language Arts (Reading), Math, and at least one of the following two courses: Science or History (Social Studies) to move on to the next grade. If students do not meet these requirements they will be retained (held back) in their current grade.
We are monitoring all student academic progress by utilizing the Fail List. Please note that any student in an extracurricular activity that is on the Fail List will not be able to participate the next week. Encourage your child to complete their homework every night.
Power School: Power School is up and running, please utilize this tool by contacting our secretary, Missy Shaffer. She can register you so that you are able to see your child’s lunch balances, grades, attendance, etc. on your own computer. You can also email teachers from this site as well.
District Website: Please check out the District website (www.cusd4.com) and go to our Unity Middle School website to check out all of the things going on at UMS.
Lunch Balance: Continually check your child’s lunch balance. If your child is in the negative they will not be able to eat the regular lunch and will be provided with an alternative lunch.
